Band of Horses live at Proud Larry's in Oxford

Band Of Horses rocked Proud Larry's. This was their ninth show in a row. Although his voice didn't show it, you could tell his throat was killing him. They played a nice cover of David Alan Coe's "You Don't Even Call Me By My Name." They were very into the crowd especially during the cover. They played pretty much everything but "Saint Augustine." Great show all around. Video of the cover below. P.S. His tattoo on his neck looks like an animal from "Where the Wild Things Are." (Above)

Oxford...Oh How I Love You

Oxford keeps moving up the ladder in the music world. I just found out that "the whistler" Andrew Bird is releasing his new record on fat possum records here in Oxford. From his website. "When not on tour, Mr. Bird is working on his new album "Armchair Apocrypha" in Minneapolis, MN - click here to read a bit more about the recording in process... it will be out next spring on Fat Possum records." Also, Fingerlings 3 "is also finished - it is for sale at the shows and will be available on the website in early October - it includes live selections from the new album, a few studio outtakes, as well as other tracks from the last few years." Band of Horses show at Proud Larry's....review coming soon. Sorry, I finally got the internet and got married, moved, and passed the bar, so I will try to post more...

The National: finally....

I finally took all the bloggers' advice and bought The National Alligator. It truly is a solid album from start to finish. I hear echoes of Interpol mixed with Crash Test Dummies, but better. Most of the album is very unique mixed with some catchy choruses. The instrumentation contains violins, cellos, keyboards, and guitars. It takes a listen or two to get into his voice, but by the end you will love it. Here is their website to download songs etc. website and myspace. "Secret meeting" is my favorite song.

Best thing I have heard in a while......Arizona

This is honestly probably the best thing I've heard in a while.Arizona has got it all: lyrics, the voice, numerous instruments, that all create unique, original melodies. They now have the cd on ITunes and it is not supposed to come out until August 18th. I would have to compare them to a mixture between Radiohead and Phoenix. Check out DOWNLOAD "Some Kind of Chill"
Also, check out i guess i'm floating blog. here. They have two more songs.
Oh, and I will be not posting any next week because I am taking the Bar......

Sovay: What in the heck is that?

I was daydreaming as I was studying for this dreaded bar, and "Sovay" popped in my head. Then, I asked myself, "What does that mean?" Well, thanks to Google check this out.

"Sovay" is the name of the album's first song, but don't run off to look up the word in a dictionary; not knowing what the word means, says Bird, is what makes it so much fun. In an interview, Bird explained that the song was born during a time of writer's block. Thinking that his muse had left him, Bird cracked open a volume of old English poetry and came across the mysterious word that serves as this song's title. Bird had no idea what he meant, but, for whatever reason, the song seemed to flood him with inspiration, and the great songs began gushing out. It's an easy-going, lilting little pop song about fighting back against the forces that seek to contain and confine creativity. It's a song about the tricky nature of inspiration. It's a song about something happening that's never happened before… "and a word washed ashore…"

Sovay, Sovay all on a day
She dressed herself in man's array
With a sword and pistol all by her side
To meet her true love, to meet her true love, away did ride

As she was riding over the plain
She met her true love and bid him stand
"Your gold and silver, kind Sir," she said
"Or else this moment, or else this moment, your life I'll have"

The Bird version is sort of similar.

sovay, sovay,sovay
all along the day

I was getting ready to consider my next plan of attack
I think I'm gonna sack
the whole board of trustees
all those Don Quixotes and their B-17s
and I swear this time
yeah this time
they'll blow us back to the 70's
and this time
they're playin Ride of the Valkyries
with no semblance of grace or ease
and they're acting on vagaries
with their violent proclivities
and they're playing ride
Ride of the Valkyries
sovay,sovay,sovay
all along the day

Beruit: Finally got it.

I finally got Beirut from a friend. Its one of those cd's I didn't want to buy because I didn't know if I would like it. However, I love it. It almost sounds puts you in the Godfather era at Tony Montana's wedding, but it truly is intriguing. It consists of many instruments including trumpet from Paris, farfisa organ, accordion, piano, ukelele, mandolin, glockenspiel, violin, cello, tambourine, The air powered organ I bought on twelth street, Congo drum donated from the neighbors....A broken microphone stolen from the university of new mexico.... . It really hard to describe. It is very original...very. Anyway, give it a go....Postcard From Italy (click and scroll down to download)

It's Better to Burn Out than to Fade Away

Pink Floyd Founder Syd Barrett Dead at 60
Tuesday, July 11, 2006

It's funny. People are so fascinated with rock stars who lose their mind. i.e. Jeff Mangum, Syd Barrett. Its like we have some connection with them, or envy them (I don't know). Go out and rent/buy "The Wall" dvd in memory of Syd, make a drink, or fire one up (whatever you do) and pay tribute to one of the greats rock legends from probably the greatest band of all time.

LONDON — Syd Barrett, the troubled talent who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.

The spokeswoman — who declined to give her name until the band made an official announcement — confirmed media reports that he had died. She said Barrett died several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause of death. Barrett had suffered from diabetes for many years.

Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright, and wrote many of the band's early songs. The group's jazz-infused rock and drug-laced, multimedia "happenings" made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene. The 1967 album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" — largely written by Barrett, who also played guitar — was a commercial and critical hit.

But Barrett suffered from mental instability, exacerbated by his use of LSD. His behavior grew increasingly erratic, and he left the group in 1968 — five years before the release of Pink Floyd's most popular album, "Dark Side of the Moon." He was replaced by David Gilmour.

Barrett released two solo albums — "The Madcap Laughs" and "Barrett" — but soon withdrew from the music business altogether.

He spent much of the rest of his life living quietly in his hometown of Cambridge, England, and reverting to his real name, Roger Barrett.

He was a familiar figure, often seen cycling or walking to the corner store, but rarely spoke to the fans and journalists who sought him out over the years.

Despite his brief career, Barrett's fragile, wistful songs influenced many musicians, from David Bowie — who covered the Barrett track "See Emily Play" — to the other members of Pink Floyd, who recorded the album "Wish You Were Here" as a tribute to their troubled bandmate.

It contained the song "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" — "Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun." The band also dwelt on themes of mental illness on the albums "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall."

The band spokeswoman said a small, private funeral would be held.

Freak Folk, "Modest Mouse on Downers"

Freak Folk, "Modest Mouse on downers" whatever you want to call them. Grizzly Bear has a unique, interesting sound. I posted a song, "On a Neck, On a Spit" they offered on their website to the left <-- over at the Best of 2006. Their new cd Yellow House is coming out on Warp Records September 5th.

Explosions in the Sky - amazing

If you like the ambient uplifting/depressing music of Sigur Ros, this cd will fog up your eyelids and send a chill down your spine. Explosions in the Sky's The Earth is Not a Cold Dark Place is truly moving. Here is a song from that album that I got off of their website. Your Hand in Mine (via Savefile) Still not convinced? Go Here and click on album. They have like 10 songs for free to download. Great stuff.

Loose Fur (basically a new Wilco album)

Loose Fur is Jeff Tweedy, Jim O'Rourke, and Glenn Kotche. Jeff Tweedy is the singer/songwriter of Wilco, Glenn is the drummer of Wilco, and Jim O'Rourke mixed Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The new album "Born Again in the USA" is basically a new Wilco album. I highly recommend it. It has all the elements of a good Wilco album. It contains abrupt jam-outs accompanied with slow melodies. O'Rourke sings on a couple of songs. His voice is echoes folky tones while keeping the listener interested. "Wreckroom" is the highlight at a lengthy eight minutes. However, it does not get old. Hints of "Spiders: Kidsmoke" ring throughout. Check them on out myspace or the video at the bottom.

Birdmonster - Live on Radio Show

Birdmonster is a great new band you need to check out if you haven't. The best song you can download in "Best Songs of 2006" to the left <----- called "All the Holes in the Walls," but here are some other great songs they played on a recent radio show. If i had to describe them I would say a mixture between Modest Mouse and Fugazi minus the hardness of both. Great quality show too.

01 - Ice Age
02 - Cause You Can
03 - The Bar in the Back of the Basement
04 - Balcony (highly recommended)
05 - Resurrection Song

Oops, I fell on my own Pitchfork...Jeff Mangum Article was a Hoax

Jeff Mangum Story was a hoax. Good Job Pitchfork. I saw that yesterday on a blog who was skeptical about the article, and of course Pitchfork wanted to jump on it but sorry guys you are wrong. Taken from Brooklynvegan
"Updating a story first posted here (Billboard) yesterday (June 27), Neutral Milk Hotel principal Jeff Mangum has disavowed a Web posting attributed to him, which falsely referenced the progress on the reclusive artist's first new album since 1998's iconic 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.'

Longtime collaborator Robert Schneider, who fronts the Apples In Stereo, reached out to Mangum in an attempt to verify the posting, which was made on a Web site devoted to the Elephant 6 musical collective. Schneider then posted Mangum's reply on the site, which reads, 'I am sorry to inform you that this is not my post. Could you please inform the good people ... that this is not my writing?'" [Billboard]

In Pitchfork's defense, they seemed to get confirmation from a reliable source before posting. Most of all this is just funny, but sad. Next probable hoaxes: Radiohead says they're breaking up (thx Phil) & Pavement says they're getting back together.

New Postal Service in the Works....REEE

FROM PITCHFORKMEDIA.COM
Postal Service Begin Work on New Album
LP to Arrive Weeks Late, Covered in Stamps, At Somone Else's Address

Back in 2003, when music was still in its infancy, Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello came together as the Postal Service to release a little record called Give Up, making it okay for indie kids to get down. And the world was never the same.

In years to come, Give Up will serve as an education in the entirety of music's history all by itself. That is, unless its follow-up improves upon it, in which case we can include it in the curriculum as well.

Gibbard has spoken of that ever-elusive follow-up in a recent interview on MTV.com, in which he said, "We're slowly starting. We're crawling right now, and whether that crawl turns into a walk remains to be seen. But we'll know more towards the end of the year. I've just been touring so much and trying to find time to make it happen and make our schedules line up."

Jimmy Tamborello echoed Gibbard's statement in a recent Pitchfork interview, saying, "We're talking about wanting to finish an album by sometime next year, because we have to work with Death Cab's schedule and stuff. I definitely want to do another one."

Tamborello also said he hopes Jenny Lewis will be more involved in the process this time around. The Rilo Kiley frontwoman and solo artist was a vocalist on Give Up, and, depending on her schedule, she might contribute as a songwriter on the upcoming record.

When asked about the direction the new album would take, Tamborello said, "I always have this idea to branch out and try something new, but at the same time, the Postal Service is a really nice outlet. It's so fun to do. Changing it too much or even overthinking it... I just don't want to make it a drag to work on."

According to MTV.com, only two songs have been recorded for the album, but writing and recording will take priority once Death Cab for Cutie's tour schedule winds down. However, Gibbard is "in the very early stages of writing a new Death Cab record, too," so maybe he'll never get around to the Postal Service album. C'mon, Ben, do it for the kids!

Gibbard explained his schedule to MTV thusly: "We're going to do one more lap around the country and then go home and work on music. At the end of the year is when this is all going to wrap up, and we can all get back to work."

As for how recording for the new project is being handled, the boys are still keeping it real-- long distance style-- but instead of the mail, they've taken to trading tracks via the internet. "[Since] this time we know how to do YouSendIt.com, doing stuff online is a lot easier now. So we probably won't be using the actual mail," Tamborello said. When asked if this might necessitate a name change for the group, he laughed and said, "Yeah, ‘YouSendIt-dot-com'."

Modest Mouse Postpones Tour to Finish record in Oxford; I Continue to Be a Stalker

Isaac Brock smoking a cigarette outside of Sweet Tea.
I choked again. I walked right by Sweet Tea Sunday and Isaac, Johnny Marr, and the rest of them were all sitting outside just hanging out. My fiance and I were walking on the sidewalk right by the studio. Isaac was with a girl so I decided to not bother him. I basically stared them all down though like a kid at a toy store window. Just as I passed the studio, it started pouring down rain. I thought to myself, "If I would have talked to them, they might have invited me inside to shelter from the storm." Oh well. I didn't. Anyway, long story not so short this is from their website.
"MODEST MOUSE POSTPONES AUGUST TOURING"
"With Modest Mouse on a feverish pace to finish their new album, the decision was made to remain in the studio and postpone the upcoming August dates. The band is currently recording the album in Mississippi with producer Dennis Herring (Good News For People Who Love Bad News). The group sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience and is looking forward to finishing their new album and rescheduling the dates."

Possibly the End of the Internet and the Best Songs of 2006

The end of the internet (as WE know it) could be coming soon. Little blogs like this could be gone and destroyed by Corporate America. Congress is trying to pass a law that would treat the internet like Cable TV where not just anyone can have a website. Read the article over at Mocking Music.

I also posted the best of 2006 mp3's to download over on the left hand side of the blog. Download them, put them on a cd and be very happy.

Great new band: PHOENIX

I finally got a chance to listen to Phoenix. I am now a huge fan. These Parisian guys have a little hint of the Shins. Pitchfork gave it a 8.0 and it was deemed as the esteemed "Best New Music" a few weeks ago. Their third album, It's Never Been Like That is a solid cd. My favorite song is "Long Distance Call" which starts out sounding like 2001 Space Odyssey then kicks into a poppy almost Spoon sounding beat. Here is the video
Here is are two tracks from a live show. "Long Distance Call" and "Rally"

Ludicrous Lucero

Lucero is a band from Memphis that I just came across recently. Their sound rings tones of Drive-By Truckers and Uncle Tupelo. I recommend the cd That Much Further West. I love almost every song on the cd. They have some solid videos at this link including one of my favorites, "Tears Don't Matter Much." Currently, they are not on tour. Here is the title track to the album. That Much Further West

The Strokes and Apples in Stereo - Live in Memphis, TN

The Strokes blew me away. Apples in Stereo opened and were very good. The Strokes light show was amazing, and they sounded perfect. The crowd was very much into it. The energy at the New Daisy was amazing. The show got moved from the Orpheum to a packed New Daisy Theater, which was perfect because the venue is much smaller (capacity 1000). Instead of rambling here are pics and videos of the night.

I taped a couple of parts.
Here is "Ask Me Anything" live in Memphis.

Here is a sample of "The End Has No End"

AND a live version of the best Strokes song ever. You Only Live Once

Radiohead's Thom Yorke Releasing Somewhat of a "Solo" CD.

Thom Yorke is releasing a somewhat solo cd on July 11. He explained "I have been itching to do something like this for ages. It was fun and quick to do. Inevitably it is more beats & electronics. But its songs. Yes its a record! No its not a Radiohead record. As you know the band are now touring and writing new stuff and getting to a good space." Sounds interesting.

He also quashed any rumors of break-up "I want no crap about me being a traitor or whatever splitting up blah blah... this was all done with their blessing. And I don't wanna hear that word solo. Doesn't sound right. Ok then that's that."

How funny is this mash-up of "Ice Ice Baby" and "Idioteque." "Vanilla Idiot."

Two Amazing Bands: Colour Revolt and Anathello Live Wed. May 3rd at Proud Larry

First of all, both of these bands are amazing live. Anathallo is very similar to Sufjan Stevens. Their live shows are full of life. They have these huge drums on stage that the trumpet player bangs on. They have around 7 people and many instruments including toy pianos, trumpets, trombones, and guitars. Here is a huge article about them. Here is a great mp3 from them.

Here is a Video of them.

Colour Revolt is from Oxford, MS. Check them out at myspace The live shows have more energy than you can imagine. Their sound is very thick with guitars and an occasional keyboard. The singer has a very solid voice and also screams with great emotion. You can get their EP at insound for $7.00 HERE Here is a sample mp3 Download.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy & Matt Sweeney Live in Oxford, MS

BPB is totally different live then you would think he would be. Basically, he rocked hard on every song. He played many off of Superwolf including "Beast for Thee," "I Gave You," "My Home is the Sea," "Blood Embrace," "What Are You," "Lift Us Up," and many others. Will's outfit was absolutely hilarious, and Matt Sweeney looked like he was straight out of the pits of Talladega. We hung out with Will Oldham after the show, and he was very cool. Definitely not as strange as I thought he was going to be.

Here is a video of "My Home is the Sea" from the show.

Sorry

Sorry, I didn't post last week our internet was down. Here is what's new. Sunset Rubdown is a side project by Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug. Here is an mp3 of I'll Believe in Anything - (Sunset Rubdown)

New Cd's reviewed.
The new Flaming Lips is pretty good. Yeah Yeah Yeah song is for sure my favorite. "Goin On" is slower but still pretty solid. "Free Radicals" is a Prince type song similar to "I Turn My Camera On." Those are the highlights of the album. The rest are pretty good.

The new Drive-By Trucker's is for sure a let down. I love these guys, but as the critics have mentioned it is too polished. Dirty South is much better. I would have to say "Gravity's Gone" is probably the best song. Although some people don't like when Hood talks I like it on "World of Hurt." "Daylight" by Isobell is also a pretty good song but has nothing on "Danko" or "Outfit" from Dirty South and Decoration Day.

The new Built to Spill's "You In Reverse" is a really good album. It took me a while to like it but now I love it. Opening track "Going Against Your Mind" is long but very good. It starts off with a two minute jam at the beginning. "Gone" and "The Wait" are my two favorites.

I am still rocking Band of Horses and Mates of State.
